Eastern Loggerhead Shrike
This is a songbird like no other.
Also called the "butcher bird," due to its habit of impaling its prey on barbed wire and sharp thorns, the eastern loggerhead shrike is a medium sized grey bird with a sleek black eye mask on its head.
They have a razor sharp beak, comparable to that of a raptor birds, that they use to tear into their prey.
Western Painted Turtle
Nature's canvas.
The western painted turtle is the largest subspecies of painted turtles. These turtles earned their name because of their bold yellow stripes found across their body and shell, and the bright red colour found on their bellies.
It's as if they were carefully painted by nature!
Butler's Gartersnake
A ssssuperb species!
You might have seen a gartersnake in your local outdoor space, but chances are it wasn't this one! The Butler's gartersnake has one of the smallest ranges of all native Ontario snake species, and has a unique appearance, habitat, and diet compared to other gartersnakes.
The yellow stripe running down the side of its body isn't just for looks, when combined with a sidewinding movement it helps startle and confuse predators as the Butler's gartersnake makes its escape.
